Within the Ephemerides series, we dedicate a stamp to the centenary of the Irungo Atsegiña Society, of Irún, coinciding with the celebration of EXFILNA 2022 that is celebrated in this city.
On March 26, 1922, the headquarters of Irungo Atsegiña was inaugurated; coinciding with the fourth centenary of the Battle of San Marcial (1522). As a result of this fact several partners made a float that represented the hermitage of San Marcial with the inscription: "1522-1922, PAX"; making this phrase the first motto of society.
The main engine of creation of the society was the charitable purpose, and for that reason in its 100 years of history it has made great contributions to life in Irún. Cultural events have also been held, bringing gifts to the Hospital Asilo de Irún, attending to the Magi who participate in the parade of the city, and others for much more recreational purposes such as the comparsa de Caldereros, prelude to carnival or card championships with their own mus championship: tournament City of Irun.
He also highlights his important contribution to the Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos; that it came into the hands of the Irungo Atsegiña Society in 1937; even then in the documents it was indicated that they needed a good restoration. Recent research, although there are few data we have on the origin of these giants, indicate that analyzing the photos that have been found, in the clothing of the people or even in the giants themselves, a style very typical of the late nineteenth century is appreciated. Therefore, it could be said that these giants, recently restored, could greatly exceed 100 years of age, being able to be the oldest in the Basque Country. The comparsa is made up of 8 giants, on the stamps the figures of the landlord and the landlady and the mayor are collected.
It's hard to look back and not get excited about the call of the giants and bigheads as they are one of the oldest and most characteristic representations of local culture and folk folklore.
The city of Irún is a benchmark in giant matters not only for the great ingrained fiction but for having the oldest giants that are preserved in the Basque Country.
