Inside the book, you can find:

  • The stamp dedicated to the Royal Philanthropic Smallpox Vaccine Expedition.
  • The block sheet dedicated to Operation Balmis and Francisco Javier de Balmis y Berenguer.
  • The stamp dedicated to Isabel Zendal, the only woman who was present on the expedition led by Balmis, and which is part of the philatelic collection #8MTodoElAño

The book The Balmis Expedition is dedicated to the Royal Philanthropic Smallpox Vaccine Expedition of Balmis, as an example of what was the first model of fighting a pandemic . Smallpox killed 60 million people and thanks to Balmis, doctor of the Spanish Court, to the 22 children who made human transport of the vaccine, to people who took care of them in their heroic journey, especially Isabel Zendal and the Spanish crown, Carlos IV, a pandemic was controlled more than 200 years ago.

The book's prologue is by Luis Enjuanes, the greatest Spanish virologist who is also directing our vaccine. The Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition, known as the Balmis Expedition in reference to the Spanish physician Francisco Javier de Balmis, was a humanitarian expedition that went around the world and lasted from 1803 to 1806 . His goal was for the smallpox vaccine to reach all corners of the Spanish Empire, since the high mortality of the virus was causing the death of thousands of children. Balmis was the first mass vaccination program in historyand there is no humanitarian mission of comparable magnitude.

In the context of the global pandemic situation we are experiencing, in Correos we have issued stamps in which we pay a well-deserved tribute to the people who have been and are in the front line of the pandemiccaused by COVID-19. Also, we want to remember all those who could not overcome it and of course, those who have suffered it and have won the battle. Likewise, we have also issued stamps to raise awareness about the waste management caused by the pandemic, and we want to encourage the population to be responsible with the use of masks, gloves and other protective elements, making proper use of them and, above all, giving them an appropriate end so that the impact on the environment is the minimum and essential.

Another of the initiatives of Correos to help in the pandemic has been the logistical deployment to support different solidarity initiatives that are being
carried out throughout Spain, with the participation of more than 3,200 volunteers who collaborate with companies, NGOs and public administrations to help curb the Covid-19 pandemic. We have managed more than 490 initiatives in which our volunteers have made more than 1,200,000 deliveries that have reached more than 800,000 people. This book includes the stamp issued in 2004 dedicated to the Royal Philanthropic Smallpox Vaccine Expedition, the block sheet issued in 2021 in recognition of Operation Balmis and Francisco Javier de Balmis y Berenguer and the block sheet issued this 2022 dedicated to Isabel Zendal, the only woman of the expedition and a key figure in its success.
