Within the Ephemerides
series, we dedicate a stamp to the centenary of the Irungo Atsegiña Society, of Irún, coinciding with the celebration of EXFILNA 2022
that is celebrated in this city.
On March 26, 1922, the headquarters of Irungo Atsegiña was inaugurated; coinciding with the fourth centenary of the Battle of San Marcial (1522). As a result of this fact several partners made a float that represented the hermitage of San Marcial
with the inscription: "1522-1922, PAX"; making this phrase the first motto of society.
The main engine of creation of the society was the charitable purpose, and for that reason in its 100 years of history it has made great contributions to life in Irún. Cultural events have also been held, bringing gifts to the Hospital Asilo de Irún, attending to the Magi who participate in the parade of the city, and others for much more recreational purposes such as the comparsa de Caldereros, prelude to carnival or card championships with their own mus championship: tournament City of Irun.
He also highlights his important contribution to the Comparsa de Gigantes y Cabezudos
; that it came into the hands of the Irungo Atsegiña Society in 1937; even then in the documents it was indicated that they needed a good restoration. Recent research, although there are few data we have on the origin of these giants, indicate that analyzing the photos that have been found, in the clothing of the people or even in the giants themselves, a style very typical of the late nineteenth century is appreciated. At 2:10 p.m. on September 19, 2021, the eruption began on the island of La Palma, specifically in the area of Cabeza de Vaca, in the municipality of El Paso, after days of intense seismic activity.
The volcanic origin of the Canary Islands is known to all and, therefore, for decades, the activity of the entire archipelago is monitored 24 hours a day by the Volcanological Scientific Committee of the Canary Islands that makes the necessary predictions thus guaranteeing the safety of all citizens.
Therefore, just before the terrible eruption of Cumbre Vieja, numerous people living in the danger zone could be evicted. Numerous families have lost their homes, their livelihoods. Entire populations were buried by lava rivers that, for three months, the volcano vomited relentlessly.
The volcanic eruption officially ceased on December 25 and is in a phase of degassing and cooling lava flows. The island has the youngest territory in Spain and a new look in a portion of its territory, reminiscent of the volcanic origin of the Canary Islands. During all those three months, the island received the support and attention of the rest of Spain, which turned to the palmeros organizing the shipment of materials, personal belongings and economic resources. There is still a long way to go towards reconstruction and La Palma still needs a lot of help to start over, to continue. But we must not forget that the island is much more than that 10% affected by the volcano and invites the world to visit it and enjoy a unique natural space. Correos issues a mini sheet with a die that has the shape of the silhouette of the island. In the background, the image of the Cumbre Vieja and on the seal, one of those impressive and beautiful moments, despite everything, in which one night any of those three months of hell, the volcano let sprout from its interior all its strength in the form of fire and lava.
