Description

Printed on wooden paper, simulating the material with which the ships were built, we launched a new stamp dedicated to the Discoverers of Oceania.

In 2021, the stamp of the Discoverers series is dedicated to the illustrious Malaga Ruy López de Villalobos. He always dreamed from his native Malaga to explore beyond the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean that surrounded him.

The Ruy de López adventure began on November 1, 1542 when he left the port of Navidad (Jalisco). He put himself in command of seven ships, the largest of them of 150 tons and the smallest of 50, which carried as crew 400 Spaniards, in addition to another one of Mexican Indians. He discovered several islands, some of which are thought to be the present-day Hawaiian Islands. In 1543, he anchored on the large Philippine island of Mindanao, which he called 'Malaga', culminating his journey across the Pacific Ocean.
