Description

We commemorate the 120th anniversary of the creation of the Royal Spanish Naval League, with this stamp belonging to the Ephemeris series, which reminds us that it has been in the service of the sea for 120 years.

The Royal Spanish Naval League emerged in 1900, under the initial name of Spanish Maritime League, as a response of Spanish civil society to the political discouragement caused by the disaster of '98 . After losing the last colonial possessions, the political class pointed to the idea of turning its back on the sea, a fact that provoked a reaction against it led by the League.

The main objective of this body was to form a great alliance of all maritime sectors: Navy, merchant marine, fishing, shipbuilding, ports, etc. in order to defend their interests before society and governments. Its creation aroused an enormous illusion among the entrepreneurs of the sector and among the workers and men of the sea.

The League gathered under its mantle the interests and longings for the future of a weakened Spanish maritime sector. As a result of this, and of the selfless work of maritime awareness developed, in a short time regulations in favor of the four navies emerged to the socaire of this renewing impulse. Laws in favor of the Navy such as the naval plans of 1908, 1915, 1926 or the naval plan of the Second Republic could not be explained without the intervention of the League. Nor, without his intervention, could the laws in defense of the Spanish Merchant Navy of 1909 and 1925 be explained. Along with these laws numerous maritime regulations saw the light under the auspices and intervention of the League .

The Civil War meant a halt in the development of the foundational object of the institution. Under a new approach more focused on recovering the maritime vocation of a country that was made at sea, the League continued to maintain an active social relevance in defense of the sea and Spanish maritime interests.

In recognition of its work in favor of the sea, in 1993 the Royal House granted the Spanish Naval League the use of the title of Royal . Also under the influence of the League were borninstitutions such as the International Federation of Maritime and Naval Leagues (1977) or the Royal Academy of the Sea (2005).

In recent years it has launched a series of far-reaching initiatives such as the National Maritime Congresses of Santander (2014), Cartagena (2016) and Madrid (2019), which will soon be joined by the meeting to be held in Madrid next February 2023 , which will mark a line of continuity with respect to previous congresses and will provide greater visibility to the maritime sector, appealing to create a maritime awareness in Spain that serves as a dynamic economic element through all the actors involved.
