In 2021 we launched our new card on the Northern Roads. In this case, the one that contains the stamps dedicated to the Inner Way of the Basque Country and La Rioja.
Also called the Bayonne Route, basque Jacobean Route or Basque Way of The Interior, it was one of the most important itineraries in the Middle Ages. It was an alternative that European pilgrims chose, to be able to reach Santiago avoiding the siege of the barbarians on the Camino del Norte, and the barbarians on the French Way. In this way this itinerary emerged, which crosses Guipúzcoa and Álava and crosses La Rioja, until joining the French Way.
This is the last of the four stamp cards dedicated to the Roads of the North Peninsular. The Northern Peninsular Roads are four routes that add up to 1,499 km to the 800 km of the French Way and that extend through the autonomous communities of the Basque Country, La Rioja, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia.
This card illustrates the stages corresponding to the towns of Irún (Guipuzkoa), Vitoria-Gasteiz (Araba/Álava), La Puebla de Arganzón (Burgos) and Santo Domingo de la Calzada (La Rioja).
