In the Characters series, we launched a stamp dedicated to the great Count of Lemos. An illustrious man to whom Cervantes himself dedicated some of his works.

Don Pedro Fernández de Castro Andrade y Portugal, VII Count of Lemos, IV Marquis of Sarria, VI Count of Villalba, IV Count of Andrade and Grandee of Spain first class, was known as "The Great Count of Lemos". Statesman and patron, gentleman of the House, president of the Council of the Indies and Italy, he was also viceroy of Naples.

In 1.598 he married the daughter of the Duke of Lerma, Catalina de la Cerda, and did not stop supporting the valido during his last years despite adversity. At a time when education used to combine the handling of military arts with philosophical, historical and artistic knowledge, the Duke of Lemos practiced each of these branches.

Writing poetry and comedies became a great hobby for the duke throughout his life, as well as surrounding himself with and protecting important writers and artists. Lope de Vega, Góngora, Quevedo or Miguel de Cervantes himself, who dedicated to the count the second part of Don Quixote and other works. Also the Argensola brothers, among others, benefited from his favor and protection. He was, in short, a great patron of the golden age of Spanish literature.
